Hike on Sunday, 13 December 2015 – Savage park

This Sunday’s hike will be at Savage Park in Howard County, MD.  An easy to moderate 6 to 7 mile hike that will take about 3.5 hours along the Middle and Little Patuxent Rivers. We will meet at the parking lot off Vollmerhausen Road. The hike starts at 9:00 AM.

From 95, take exit 38A and merge onto MD-32 E then take exit 12A onto US-1/Washington Blvd toward Elkridge.  Turn slight left onto Guilford Road then left onto Volmerhausen Road. After about a mile, the parking lot will be on your left.

Hike on Sunday, 6 December 2015 – Sugarloaf Mountain

This Sunday’s hike is at Sugarloaf Mountain Park located at 7901Comus Road, Dickerson, MD 20842. 

This 5 to 6 mile hike hike starts at 9:00 AM and will last around 3 hours.  The weather forecast calls for a mostly sunny day with high temperature at 54 degrees.
Direction: From Washington – North I-270, take exit 22 and turn right onto MD-109 S.  Drive on MD-109 S for about 3 miles then take a right onto Comus Road.  After about 2.5 miles on Comus Road you will reach the Sugarloaf Mountain. We will meet at the entrance parking area.

Hike on Sunday, 29 November 2015 – Catoctin Mountain ParkCatoctin Mountain Park

This Sunday’s hike will be at Catoctin Mountain Park and starts at 9:00 AM.  The address to the visitor center is 14707 Park Central Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788.  This hike is a loop and will cover some interesting points such as Hog Rock, Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock. The hike is about 4 hours (8-9 miles) with moderate difficulty level and may include some steep hills.
One of our members has graciously invited the group to go for a light meal after the hike. Please reply if you plan to attend the event after the hike.

Take, I-270 north 27 miles to Frederick, MD. Take Route 15N about 17 miles to Thurmont, MD. Take Route 77 West, the exit sign is marked
Catoctin Mountain Park. Travel approximately 3 miles west on 77 and turn right onto Park Central Road. The Visitor Center is on the right.

Direction from Baltimore:
Take I-695 beltway to I-70 West to Frederick, MD. Take Route 15 North to Thurmont, MD. Take Route 77 West, the exit sign says Catoctin
Mountain Park. Travel approximately 3 miles west on 77 and turn right onto Park Central Road. The Visitor Center is on the right.

 

Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA

The hike for this Sunday is at the Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA.

The Heritage Trail is along the river and is fairly easy.  The hike starts at 9:00 AM and will take about 2.5 hours.   Please remember that the Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday morning.

Blockhouse Point Park in Potomac

3This week’s hike will be at the Blockhouse Point Park in Potomac, Maryland.  We will meet at 9:00 AM in one of the parking areas along Pennyfield Lock Road.

The address is: 12100 Pennyfield Lock Rd, Potomac, Maryland 20854.  There is no structure associated with this address so the GPS should bring you to the proximity of our meeting point.  Drive to the end of the Pennyfield Lock Road and turn left until you see the group.  We will cross the Canal at Pennyfield Lock (Lock 22) to start our hike.
Direction:  Follow River Road West from I-495 toward Potomac, Maryland. Pass town of Potomac and Falls Road and continue west to Pennyfield Lock Rd. Turn left (south) on Pennyfield Lock Rd. and follow until it dead ends into the C&O Canal. Turn left and park in an area with the rest of the group.

The hike will be about 6 to 7 miles and will last around 3.5 to 4 hours.  The length and duration may vary depending on which trails we choose to hike.

Trails of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia


3This Sunday’s
hike will be on the trails of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  It is an opportunity to see and enjoy peak fall colors.  The hike is about 6-7 miles and will take approximately 4 hours.

One of the trails, Maryland Heights, might be too strenuous for some so those may hike an easier trail.  The group will rejoin later at a designated location.  Further detail will be provided before starting the hike.

We will meet at Appalachian Trail Headquarter, 799 Washington st., Harpers Ferry,WV 25425 at 9:00 AM.
